John Sargent - “Madame X”

The left is a black and white photograph of the original 1884 version. I like this version a lot better than when he painted the strap to not be falling down. It’s so much more sensual this way, she seems more real. More human. But unfortunately it was deemed to scandalous for the time, so Sargent painted the strap onto her shoulder after all. The right image in an approximation of what it might have looked like if he hadn’t changed the painting. [source]
